Read this Second Installment of Michael Malaghan's blog. Part Two
Novels Rule Okay… I was writing children’s TV for over 10 years (including episodes of Chucklevision and The Tweenies) but there were always budgetary restrictions. I wanted to write something explosive and expensive, and not have someone say: ‘I love that whole underwater sequence followed by the helicopter chase but we’re going to cut them because they’re too expensive. How about a nice scene in a tea shop instead?’

Everything You Say Will Be Taken Down… Interviewed by my local newspaper, The Mid Somerset News, sitting at my picnic table overlooking the lakes and trees of the nature reserve where I do a lot of my writing. Look down to see reporter is recording my every utterance. ‘What are you doing? What are you doing?’ I ask in some perturbation. Suddenly realise I have to start talking sense! Or at least trying to be interesting. Another newspaper, which I won’t name, loudly declares that my novel has received ‘Raving Reviews.’ I’m not entirely sure whether this means: Rave Reviews or that I have fans in the ‘Mad’ Community - but I’m open-minded; I have to start fan base somewhere.
As Heard on the Wireless… Am promoting Greek Ransom on another radio station later this month. Yes another. For the first one I received the following advice from my family: ‘Speak clearly!’ Did so. Response from family afterwards: ‘Why didn’t it sound like you?’ ‘Because I was speaking clearly.’ ‘Oh. Right… But why did you start singing half way through it?’ ‘That wasn’t me. That was Enrique Englasias. They put on a record.’
Back to School… First book signing event at St Clement’s College, Skegness. I’m led down a long corridor. Last time I was here (29 years ago), I was lugging a massive coffee table down the same corridor: my own coffee table, constructed in CSE Woodwork, and due to miscalculation, twice as big as on my original plans. It resembled King Arthur’s table (round, not coffee) and probably accounted for the Lincolnshire wood shortage of 1979. This time as I walk down the corridor there are superb posters of Greek Ransom lining the walls. |
