Read this Third Installment of Michael Malaghan's blog. Part Three
Kids Say the Funniest Things… During the signing I’m asked if I’ve tried selling my novel on the shopping channel QVC. It’s a great line, and there’s also a moment of: ‘Why didn’t I think of that?’ ‘It comes in one colour (blue), one size (paperback), and every single page is packed with excitement.’ |
Quiet Please! Mendip Children’s Book Group invite me to read from Greek Ransom at Glastonbury Library. Half expecting to get shushed half way through it but all goes really well. Realise later that I got off lightly. Poet friend Tracy had to dress up as a witch to do her Halloween reading at the same library. There’s talk of me dressing up as Santa Claus for a Christmas reading. Decide to keep head down from now until early January! The ‘Fame’ Thing… Recognised at the bakery in Wells, opposite where my novel is on display in the window at Waterstone’s. There’s a kind of ‘It’s you isn’t it?’ moment for a nanosecond, but I’ve been recognised for my grazing habits rather than my writing skills. ‘You’re the custard tart and the packet of Quavers aren’t you?’ Well, it’s always nice to be remembered.
Save the Best Till Last… Shortlisted for the Somerset Teenage Fiction Award 2009, with among others JK Rowling, Jacqueline Wilson and Anthony Horowitz. All three ring me to offer their congratulations. No, Wait, I dreamed the last bit… But inclusion on the shortlist is genuine, in fact my name is the only one on it I’ve never heard of before. Wish me luck! |
