DAVID: What are you thinking, Elmer?

ELMER: I was thinking about the day we met. Do you remember?

DAVID: Yes, it was a beautiful sunny day.

ELMER: You remember all days as being beautiful and sunny. Anyway I was out for a little country walk and I heard this strange sound.

DAVID: It was me singing. I used to do that a lot.

ELMER: That's as maybe, but anyway I heard this strange sound. It came from the open window of a cottage.

DAVID: My studio.

ELMER: Inside I could see drawings and paintings. The drawings were funny drawings of elephants and the paintings were squared up and painted in different colours.

DAVID: Yes, I used to draw cartoons for newspapers and often they were of elephants.

ELMER: I don't see why, there's nothing funny about elephants.

DAVID: My paintings were all coloured squares at the time. I was influenced by Paul Klee.

ELMER: And a good thing too. I walked over to the window to have a closer look.

DAVID: Yes, it suddenly went dark, you blocked out all the light. I looked up and fell over with excitement.

ELMER: You fell over with fright.

DAVID: Let's say exfrightment. I suddenly saw my drawings and my paintings put together. I asked you in for tea.

ELMER: I came in to help you up.

DAVID: And have some tea. Then we talked and you told me about yourself and I told you about myself.

ELMER: And you made a book about me.

DAVID: And you didn't make one about me.

ELMER: We can't all be famous.

DAVID: Then one day we were talking about our relations and I told you about my uncle Harold who was a ventriloquist and liked to play tricks with his voice. You were amazed because it was just like your cousin Wilbur.

ELMER: Then I told you about Wilbur and you made a book about him.

DAVID: And you didn't make one about my   Uncle Harold.

ELMER: Some of us have books about us and some of us don't.

DAVID: I liked the last story you told me about the lost teddy.

ELMER: I hope you don't expect me to write a book about your teddy.

DAVID: I never had a teddy.

ELMER: Really? Never had a teddy. Well that might explain a few things about you.
